Your First Telescope
What's realistically achievable at each price point, and how that changes depending on whether you're pointing a phone, a DSLR, or a dedicated cooled camera through it.
"What telescope should I buy?" is really two separate questions: what the telescope and mount can resolve and track, and what you're pointing through the eyepiece to actually capture it. The same £300 scope can be a fun casual Moon-watcher or a genuine deep-sky imaging rig depending entirely on the second half of that answer — so it's worth understanding the camera side before picking a price point.
What can you actually capture with each camera?
Phone (held to the eyepiece, or a cheap adapter). Genuinely fun for the Moon and bright planets — Jupiter's cloud bands and Saturn's rings are within reach on a steady night. Deep-sky targets (nebulae, galaxies) are essentially off the table: a phone can't take the long, tracked exposures that faint, extended objects need. Free to try before spending anything.
DSLR or mirrorless. This is where real deep-sky imaging starts, but only once it's paired with a tracking mount — the camera alone doesn't solve anything. Longer exposures (typically tens of seconds to a few minutes per sub-frame) become possible, RAW capture gives real processing headroom, and it's a camera you likely already have reasons to own beyond astro. The trade-off is manual polar alignment and, eventually, autoguiding to hold longer exposures steady.
Dedicated cooled astro camera. Sensor cooling suppresses the thermal noise that piles up over long deep-sky exposures, and mono sensors with a filter wheel open up narrowband imaging (isolating specific emission wavelengths — the Hα red and OIII teal this site's own colour palette is drawn from). This is the path serious imagers eventually take, but it's the most expensive route and the least flexible outside astrophotography.
Smart telescopes (all-in-one imaging scopes with the mount, camera, and stacking built in and controlled from a phone app) are their own worthwhile category alongside these three — genuinely the fastest way from unboxing to a real deep-sky image, at the cost of less manual control. ZWO Seestar S50

A tracking equatorial mount is what actually unlocks long-exposure DSLR imaging rather than just brighter visual views — this is the rig serious beginners grow into, not out of.
Sky-Watcher Explorer-200P EQ5
Real aperture (200mm) on an equatorial mount that tracks the sky's rotation — the actual precondition for long-exposure DSLR deep-sky imaging, not just brighter visual views. This is the manual EQ5 rather than a motorised GoTo version (which wasn't in stock) — you turn the slow-motion controls yourself, though an aftermarket motor drive is a common later upgrade. The learning curve is real (polar alignment, eventually guiding), but it's a rig serious beginners grow into rather than out of.
